Choosing a Male Therapist
Men tend to feel like they have to be strong. While many these days aren’t explicitly being told to "man up," they are still encouraged to bury challenging feelings and carry their burdens in silence. When the weight becomes too heavy and you finally decide to seek support, you face an immediate choice: Who should you talk to?
Women make up the majority of psychotherapists and are excellent, but there is a different dynamic – a uniquely, powerful one – in coming to see me, a male therapist, particularly when it comes to unpacking complex feelings around relationships and sex and the challenging relationship dynamics that can occur.
Lived Experience
A male therapist intuitively understands the societal scripts you’ve been handed. You don't have to spend energy translating what it feels like to navigate the modern pressures of masculinity, career stress, or the specific expectations placed on men. When you discuss your feelings with me, there is a degree of shared understanding that comes along with it.
Dropping the Guard
In many everyday relationships—whether with partners, family members, or colleagues—men often fall into habitual patterns of behaviour. There can be a subconscious pressure to always appear composed, manage emotional vulnerability, or withhold difficult thoughts. These familiar social dynamics can occasionally linger, leading you to filter your words or hold back your true thoughts.
Working with a another man can help dismantle that protective barrier. There is no perceived need to manage impressions or shield the other person. Being present with me, as we sit with complex emotions and vulnerability provides a powerful model for growth. It normalizes the exact experiences we are often taught to suppress, demonstrating that emotional depth is not a sign of weakness, but a vital component of a healthy life.
Insights into Patterns
When relationship difficulties arise, a male therapist offers a neutral space to examine your actions without triggering a defensive response. Because I stand outside the dynamic, I can offer direct, constructive feedback, helping you look honestly at your relationship patterns from a grounded, peer-to-peer perspective.
Prioritizing your mental health is a fundamental step toward personal growth. If you are ready to explore your emotions and improve your relationships, working with a therapist who understands these experiences first-hand can be a powerful place to start.
